Frequently Asked Questions
If your question is not answered, visit our parent handbook for more information.
What are your hours?
Our doors open at 7:45. Children congregate in the "North Yard," which is our indoor playspace and participate in cardio morning activities to get their blood flowing so they are ready to learn and focus. Breakfast begins at 8:00. Our official day begins at 8:20 and is the start time for Pre-Kindergarten. We dismiss our children at 2:40 from the auditorium in the back of the school.
Do you have after school programming?
Yes. Our school is fortunate to have the Children's Aid Society in our building for after-school programming and the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club around the corner. Children's Aid Society accepts 150 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis at the beginning of the school year and runs until 5:30. It is open to our kindergartners and first graders. We do not have after school for students in pre-kindergarten.
Do children wear uniforms?
Yes. Our children wear white or navy blue collared-shirts or polos with our logo and khaki bottoms. Our uniform source is NYC School Uniforms. You can purchase uniforms at: http://samara.nycschooluniforms.com
Do children go to recess every day? What about if it is raining? Snowing?
Our children go to recess every day unless it is too cold, as defined by the Board of Education. In inclimate weather, our children still have a chance to play in our indoor play space.
What is lunch like?
Our pre-kindergarten eat lunch in their classroom with a family style lunch. They set the tables and clean up after themselves, all the while socializing with their classmates. Kindergarten- fifth grade eats lunch in the cafeteria followed by recess.
Can I volunteer?
Yes. We would love for families to volunteer in our school. We will let you know when our Learning Leader applications are available to get the process started.
Are you co-located?
Yes. We share our building with Fairmont Neighborhood School, a PK-5 elementary school. The building principals have sat down and carefully devised a plan to support our schools and maintain each school's unique identity and spaces as one.
Are you a new school?
We are a new school in our last year of expansion and are very excited at the opportunity to host a full school PK-5. Come be a part of our intimate community!
What grades will be available for September 2019-202 school year?
We will have two pre-kindergarten classes, two kindergarten dual language classes, two first grade Dual Language classes and two second grade Dual Language classes, two third grade Dual Language classes, two fourth grade classes and now- two fifth grade Dual Language classes.
What if my child doesn't speak Spanish?
All children are here to learn to listen, speak, read and write academically and socially in two languages. Some students are learning English, some are learning Spanish and some are perfecting their bilingual skills as already bilingual speakers. We believe all children are capable of learning two languages.
